The industry runs on an assumption: once you leave, you do not come back, and if you do, you do not come back to the same position. Saika Kawakita’s career is the documented exception. She debuted in 2018, went quiet after a year, was written up as retired, and then returned in 2021 — and within months was standing at the top of the industry’s sales ranking.

The comeback that the assumption says cannot happen is the entire point of this profile.

April 2018: a debut that went straight to #1

Kawakita debuted in April 2018 with S1 No. 1 Style, in Shinjin No. 1 Style Kawakita Saika AV Debut — the flagship newcomer line at the flagship label. The tagline was “the overwhelming-transparency school of beautiful girls.”

The debut numbers were anomalous for a newcomer. Her debut title went to #1 in FANZA’s 2018 annual film ranking, she placed three titles in the top ten, and at the 2019 FANZA Adult Awards the debut title took the Best Work award in both streaming and rental categories.

In a tier where even good debuts rarely top the year, hers did — on the first try. That fact is what makes the next part of the story strange, because it is also what the industry lost when she stopped.

2019: the silence, reported as retirement

After a best-of compilation in March 2019, new releases stopped. In October 2019, Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News listed her among performers who had “retired, to the regret of fans” — a factual report of a vanished career.

She later explained the reason herself: people she knew had found out about her AV work. It is one of the industry’s most real exit reasons, and in most cases it is the end. An exclusive contract runs for a term; expiry without renewal is the ordinary outcome, which our careers explainer covers in full. At a year in, her career looked like the standard short one, closed.

July 2021: the return

In June 2021, Monthly FANZA put her on the cover of its August issue and announced her return. The comeback title, Kawakita Saika Re:start!, was released on 19 July 2021.

It became S1’s best-selling title of 2021. After a two-and-a-half-year gap, the release went straight to consecutive #1s on FANZA’s sales floor. The hiatus had not erased the demand; the release proved it at the moment of publication.

What followed is the actual reason this profile exists:

  • December 2021 — Best Actress, Shukan Playboy Adult Awards 2021
  • 2021 — #1, FLASH sexy-actress ranking; #1, Monthly FANZA H2 2021 performer ranking
  • 2022 — #1 in FANZA’s performer sales ranking for three consecutive periods (H2 2021 – H2 2022)
  • April 2024 — first overall #1 in Asahi Geino’s “sexy general election” — the fourth performer ever, counting from Akiho Yoshizawa

The climb back to the top was fast. And the more interesting detail is what she was not doing while it happened.

The detail: selling without promotion

Look at her hiatus-era catalogue and you find something unusual: the pre-return titles had no sample clips, and parts of the on-set still photography were kept off the public record. This is the industry’s “publicity-limited” tier — the performer whose promotional entrances are closed, deliberately.

The sales were still there. The Japanese AV writer Katsutomo Kochi described it directly: “no sample video at all, and yet terrifyingly popular.”

That matters because it separates her ranking from the normal explanation. The industry’s sales rankings reflect promotional scale more than is often admitted; the names at the top usually have the marketing budgets behind them. Kawakita’s peak was the opposite case — a demand figure that arrived without the machinery. The ranking explainer covers why this distinction matters.

Two name changes and a singing debut

Her career has not stayed inside the AV frame.

6 March 2024 — she changed her stage name to 彩伽 (same reading, Saika), and moved agencies from CRUSE to Mine’s. 6 February 2026 — she switched back to 彩花 and moved to the T-Powers agency. Both changes were announced publicly; neither is the kind of thing that happens quietly in this industry.

12 February 2025 — she debuted as a singer under the name Moena with Zutto Isshoni (“Always Together”). It went to #1 on the iTunes J-Pop top songs chart in Hong Kong and Indonesia. Her X account carries the follow-up single’s video.

Her own account is where the day-to-day shows up, for example the announcement of the second single in 2026.

In 2024 she appeared at Taiwan’s TRE adult expo, where local media reported her as the most popular performer there; she returned for a third consecutive year in 2026.

Why the comeback matters

Retirement in this industry — intai — stops new production and nothing else. It has never been a mechanism for withdrawing the existing catalogue; that is precisely the gap the 2022 performer-protection law’s cancellation right was designed to fill. Kawakita’s career sits on both sides of that line: her early titles predate the law, and her post-return work falls under it.

But her comeback is not really about the law. It is about the assumption. She left at #1, was reported as retired, and returned to #1 — without the standard promotional apparatus. In an industry where the ordinary career leaves almost no public record, hers is the rare one that documents both the leaving and the returning, and lets you compare the demand on either side. The numbers on both sides were roughly the same. That is the whole finding.
