The structure of this industry is usually told as a one-way door: exclusive tier first, freelance tier later, and the second is the fall. Ichika Matsumoto ran the route backwards and broke a record doing it. She debuted exclusive, moved to the freelance tier in 2020, took #1 in FANZA’s monthly ranking for fifteen consecutive months, won the 2020 annual title — then returned to exclusivity with her own named label.

2019–2020: the youth-label debut, then the move

She debuted in September 2019 on SOD Creative’s “Youth Era” label — a dedicated young-performer line. In February 2020 she left exclusivity for the freelance tier (kikaku).

As the careers explainer sets out, the freelance tier is the volume layer: per-shoot work across many studios, paid less than the promoted exclusives. The usual reading is that moving here is moving down. Matsumoto’s next two years are the counterargument.

2020–2024: the record

  • July 2020 — #2, FANZA monthly
  • 2020 — #1, FANZA annual ranking
  • March 2021 — Best Actress, Weekly Playboy “Ero Academy Awards”
  • 2022 — #2 FANZA annual (but #1 among freelance performers)
  • January 2022 — 6 consecutive months at #1
  • 2023 — 10 consecutive months at #1 (Mar–Dec)
  • January–May 2024 — 15 consecutive months at #1, before the run was broken

Fifteen months at #1 in FANZA’s monthly ranking, as a freelance performer, is the record. When it ended in June 2024, the performer who broke it was Waka Misono — which makes the record a genuine piece of industry history, passed between two freelance-tier performers.

2023–2025: the exclusive return

In November 2023 she returned to exclusivity, at Das and Honnaka simultaneously — and Honnaka set up a label in her own name. That is the industry’s highest tier of treatment: a named label for one performer. In April 2024 she added Chijo Heaven, making it three.

In June 2025 the Das/Honnaka contract ended, and from August 2025 she became a solo MOODYZ exclusive.

The direction is the point. Exclusive → freelance → multi-exclusive with a named label → solo exclusive. Both halves of the industry, at maximum, in both directions.

2025–present: still #1

As a MOODYZ exclusive she is still ranking #1 in FANZA monthly charts in 2026. In May 2025 she formed the idol duo fleuR with Sumire Kuramoto, releasing a debut single and playing a mini-live in Shibuya. In February 2026 she appeared on the cover of the Shogakukan manga magazine Big Comic Spirits.

Her own X account carries the day-to-day, for example the uniform post in August 2026.

What this career means

The freelance tier can beat the exclusive tier on sales — and the record proves it. Matsumoto took #1 in the monthly ranking as a freelance performer, held it for fifteen months, and won the annual title. The ranking explainer’s point that the tiers are measured differently has its sharpest counterexample here: the “lower” tier outsold the promoted one, on volume.

And then she went back. The exclusive return with a named label is the industry’s acknowledgment that the freelance queen was worth promoting. The whole career is the two-tier system, demonstrated from both sides.

Frequently asked questions

When did Ichika Matsumoto debut in AV?

In September 2019 as an exclusive on SOD Creative's "Youth Era" label, debuting on 26 September 2019.

What is her biggest achievement?

After moving to the freelance tier in February 2020, she took #1 in FANZA's monthly AV-actress ranking for 15 consecutive months (into June 2024) and won the 2020 annual title. That 15-month run is the industry record.

Did she return to exclusive contracts?

Yes. In November 2023 she became a dual exclusive at Das and Honnaka — with her own named label at Honnaka — then added Chijo Heaven in April 2024, and moved to a solo MOODYZ exclusive in August 2025.

Is she still active?

Yes. As a MOODYZ exclusive she is still ranking #1 in FANZA monthly charts in 2026, and she also works in the idol duo fleuR with Sumire Kuramoto.

What makes her career unusual?

The direction of travel. The usual route is exclusive first, then freelance. She went exclusive to freelance — and at the top of the freelance tier, proved the tier could outsell exclusives, then returned to exclusivity.
