Yuma Asami (麻美ゆま): Sales-Chart Dominance, Illness, and an Exit into Music
Debut in 2005, back-to-back #1 in the DMM annual sales ranking for 2006 and 2007, 600-plus titles, a cancer diagnosis in 2013 — then a 2015 retirement into a music career. The career that made the freelance-exclusive hybrid mainstream.
Contents
Yuma Asami’s career has two halves, and the pivot between them is the reason she is worth profiling. The first half is raw sales dominance: back-to-back #1 in the DMM annual performer ranking for 2006 and 2007, over 600 titles, and a dual exclusive contract at Alice Japan and S1. The second half is a public cancer diagnosis, a slow exit, and a second career in music.
The two halves do not reconcile easily, which is exactly why they are worth documenting.

2005: the dual-exclusive debut
She debuted in October 2005 at 18 with an unusual arrangement: simultaneous exclusive contracts at both Alice Japan and S1 No. 1 Style. Both are flagship labels — Alice Japan the veteran, S1 the then-new flagship of the Hokuto group — and holding both at once was the industry’s way of saying “this is the one to watch.”
The sales followed immediately. She took #1 in the DMM annual performer ranking in 2006 and again in 2007 — consecutive years, in the first third of her career. The S1 work Hyper – Barely There Mosaic: Special Bath House Tsubaki won the 2007 AV Open, and her 2009 entry for the AV GrandPrix swept the DVD sales, package design, retail and featured-actress awards.
2008–2012: the volume and the music
Across more than 600 titles (2005–2013), she worked the exclusive labels plus Attackers, Premium and E-Body — effectively a hybrid of the exclusive and freelance tiers that our careers explainer treats as separate jobs.
In January 2008 she debuted as a singer with the J-pop CD “Resolution.” In 2008 she joined the Ebisu Muscats, staying until 2013, and returned for the 2018 reformation alongside Rio and Sora Aoi as a PTA member. The music career was never a footnote; it is where she went when the AV career ended.
2013: the illness, made public
In June 2013 she announced that she had undergone surgery in February 2013 to remove an ovarian tumor and was receiving chemotherapy.
This is the part of the record that matters most, and the reason the career cannot be told as a simple rise-and-retire. The industry’s normal endings — a contract expiring, a performer choosing to leave — are one thing. A performer disclosing treatment and staying public through it is another. Her last regular AV title was released on 15 June 2013; her final on-screen appearance was a bonus disc on a December 2014 compilation.
2015: retirement, into music
On 20 May 2015 she announced her retirement from the adult industry. She has described it in interviews as a move toward what she wanted to do next, not an illness-forced exit.
Since then she has worked as an independent singer-songwriter. In May 2014 she published an autobiography, Re Start, with Kodansha. She has been involved with Cancer Net Japan, the cancer-awareness organisation, and continues to perform.
What the career means
Two things.
First, the hybrid worked. Dual exclusivity at Alice Japan and S1, then work across Attackers, Premium and E-Body — she ran both tiers at once and topped the sales chart while doing it. That is the documented proof that the exclusive/freelance split is a spectrum, not a wall.
Second, the exit was public and health-related, and she stayed public. The industry’s ordinary endings are quiet and unobserved; hers was disclosed, documented, and followed by a music career and advocacy work. Against the exits elsewhere on this site — Mikami’s scheduled retirement, Okita’s catalogue withdrawal — Asami’s is the one that went through illness in public and kept going.
