Step 1: choose the actual event, not just the neighborhood

A club’s calendar can change the music, opening time, ticket price, age restriction and ID check from one night to another.

Before leaving your hotel, save:

• the official event page;
• the venue address;
• your ticket or reservation;
• the event’s age and ID wording;
• the route home.

Step 2: read the age and ID rule for that venue

Do not rely on “Tokyo clubs require passports” as a universal statement.

For example, CIRCUS TOKYO currently states that photo identification is requested for entry and that events after 22:00 do not admit people under 20. WOMB’s official FAQ has separate questions covering under-20 entry and accepted ID.

Those policies demonstrate why the source matters: the venue’s own rule for your date is the rule to plan around.

If you are an overseas visitor, Japanese authorities also require visitors who fall under the passport-carrying rule to carry the relevant passport documentation; that legal obligation is separate from whatever ID a nightclub accepts at the door.

Step 3: check dress and entry uncertainty

Dress codes can change by venue or event. If the official event/FAQ does not state a rule, contact the venue rather than treating “smart casual” as a guarantee.

Entry can also be restricted by capacity, ticket type or age. Buying a ticket does not justify inventing a universal re-entry or queue rule.

Step 4: make an all-in budget

Instead of a district-wide “night out costs X” estimate, add the costs you can verify:

Step 5: plan storage before you arrive

A venue may have lockers, a cloakroom, both or neither. Capacity and price can change. If you are carrying a suitcase or large bag, check the venue FAQ or contact it in advance rather than assuming storage is available.

Step 6: decide your last-train strategy before the first drink

Tokyo train times depend on the line, direction, day and destination. Check the exact route in the relevant railway operator’s current timetable.

Three sensible options are:

• leave in time for your actual last train;
• arrange another legitimate transport option;
• choose an event whose timing fits your planned route.

The old article’s generic “trains stop around midnight and restart around 5” is too imprecise for trip planning.

Step 7: ignore street redirection

If someone on the street tries to take you to a different bar or club, stay with the destination you verified.
