Saori Hara’s career is the industry’s version of a disappearing act with a sequel. A junior idol who signed with SOD in 2008, debuted in January 2009 to reported sales over 100,000, won the 2010 Adult Broadcasting Award — and then, in March 2011, after the Tohoku earthquake, vanished. She came back in 2014 under a different name, and the AV industry never saw her again.

The junior idol years

She began as a junior idol under the name Mai Nanami (七海まい) around 2004, singing the theme song for the TV Osaka anime Marshmallow Communication and appearing in a TBS drama and a film. It was a conventional child-entertainment start.

In 2008 she re-emerged as Saori Hara — gravure DVD in August, first nude in the magazine Sabra in September, and the announcement of an exclusive contract with Soft On Demand (SOD) that same month.

2009: the SOD debut

She made her AV debut in January 2009 with SOD. Her debut title was reported to have sold more than 100,000 copies — an exceptional number for a debut, driven by the crossover from her idol years.

She stayed exclusive to SOD for the entire AV career, with no label moves. In March 2010 she won Best Actress at the Sky PerfecTV! Adult Broadcasting Awards for her 2009 work.

2011: the disappearance

In March 2011, immediately after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, she suffered a nervous breakdown and decided to leave the entertainment industry entirely, cancelling her SOD contract. Her final original AV title was released in May 2011, and she formally announced her retirement in August 2011.

The details of the breakdown are her own; the relevant public record is that the departure was not a contract ending but a person leaving, abruptly, after a national disaster.

2014: the rebirth

In February 2014 she announced her return to entertainment under the name Matsunoi Miyabi (松野井雅), explicitly stating that she had no intention of returning to the AV industry. In April 2014 she appeared in nude gravure in Weekly Playboy under the title “Rebirth.”

From 2015 she appeared in the tokusatsu series GARO -GOLDSTORM- as the character Amiri, and she continued to work in mainstream television and film.

What the career means

A debut that was a headline, and an exit that was a disappearance. The junior-idol crossover made her debut a 100,000-sale event; the 2011 departure made her exit the kind of story the industry remembers. And the 2014 return, under a new name and explicitly outside the AV industry, is the rarest of the exits on this site — the one where the performer walked away and stayed away, into a different entertainment career.

Against the site’s other profiles — Yoshizawa writing her own record, Okita withdrawing her catalogue — Hara’s is the career that simply left the building and built a second one next door.
